A set of 6 Italian 'Monk' leather dining chairs by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Molteni. Designed in 1974, the Monk chair is one of the most well known and distinctive designs from the duo. The shape of the chair is quite simple and strikingly modern. The backrest and seat are comprised of two leather pieces fastened to solid wood block legs and solid back frame. The cognac colored leather has a deep patina which has been restored to give a more even color. There are no maker marks on these chairs.
About the Designers:
Afra (1937-2011) & Tobia (1935-) Scarpa are a duo of Italian architects and designers known for their postmodern style. Afra Bianchin was born in 1937 in Montebelluna while Tobia Scarpa, son of the famed architect Carlo Scarpa, was born in 1935 in Venice. The couple met when they were both studying at the Venice Institute of Architecture. In 1960, the duo set up one of the most successful and well-known professional studios. Together, they worked for companies such as Flos Gavina, B&B Italia, and Knoll. The couple won numerous amounts of awards like the Compasso d’Oro and the International Forum Design. Their designs are known for their modernist aesthetic, prioritizing elegance and comfort.
